Though everybody has their preferences in the kind and smell of laundry detergent that they prefer, a study was done for Home & Garden. A laundry detergent has to simultaneously attract and repel dirt, then rinse it away without damaging your clothes, skin, or the environment. The results for this study was that Tide Ultra Stain Release Free Liquid was their top pick. It did the best job of getting rid of stains and even the smell of bacon grease. It averaged 27 cents a load.

The runner up was Tide Plus Bleach. It was scented with excellent stain removal but did not perform as well on stinky smells.

Also, great was Method 4x Concentrated Laundry Detergent which was the “green” detergent. This was made mostly from plant-based ingredients. It is cheaper than Tide costing about 20 cents a load.

The Budget Pick for laundry detergent, try Costco’s Kirkland Ultra Clean Liquid. It placed well overall in testing. It actually banished smells better than Tide, but it wasn’t quite as good as Tide at tackling lipstick, grass or chocolate stains. And it’s only 13 cents per load.

Or do your own testing and let us know which detergent you prefer and why!
